a visit from the real Beverly Hillbillies
greasy girls at the East Mountain Overlook

May 2002 - EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSAS

The Uppity LA Women arrive in Eureka Springs on an uncharacteristically foggy day. The Mission: Record interviews about Eureka Springs. The reality? Their verdict? Read on ...

Ann, Liz and Rochelle are shown here at the East Mountain Overlook, a favorite photo op location with a panoramic view of Eureka. Don't these city girls look usually relaxed? Their singularly mellow expressions are courtesy of a pre-photo massage at Healing Benefits Massage Therapy Company.

(Note the haunted-looking hotel in the background. It is. Haunted. The 1886 Crescent Hotel is home to modern day visitors, Edwardian Era ghosts, and the Eureka Springs Ghost Tours, who introduced us to a number of disembodied hotel residents one dark and memorable night. Boo!)

Freshly fluffed, the Beverly Hillbillies hit White Street for the annual White Street Studio Walk.

Every year, during the month long May Festival of the Arts, artists on White Street open their homes and studios for Eureka's favorite street party.

White Street Walk is all about drinking margaritas from gas cans. It's all about hanging with packs of colorful locals, like the Vintage Ladies chapter of the Red Hat Society.

Liz shops for art with CalvinOh yes. White Street Studio Walk is also all about the art. Liz is shown here with the actual art that now hangs on her office wall.

(Calvin, also shown here, remains in Eureka)

Our heroines spent three whirlwind days, sampling a wide variety of attractions in the Eureka Springs area. Here are a few highlights:

Of course, no trip to Eureka Springs would be complete without a thorough review of Eureka's delightful dining and hopping nightlife.

crab legs at the Copacabanahorny guys at the Lumberyard Saloon "Who would guess there would be so many interesting restaurants here?" The Girls said (between bites & gulps), after plowing through Devito's Italian Cuisine ... crab legs and Lita Ritas at The Copacabana Club... South American Cuisine at Center Street South... Comedy and LOTS(!) of beer at The Lumberyard Saloon ... plus the down home southern cookin' at Big Daddy's BBQ.

(Did we miss any stops on the dining & nightlife tour? Probably. These Girls may look small but they're downright hearty.)
The Girls are shown here, demonstrating their grasp of the dining and drinking customs of the indigenous people. Note men in colorful native costume.

And when asked "So, how did you like your visit to Eureka Springs?" We got ...     the verdict
Ann interviews Zeek

Yes, they actually did get a little work done, now that you mention it. Ann is shown here interviewing Zeek Taylor, one of the founders of the White Street Studio Walk and frequently the best dressed man in town.     (Photo by MJ Sell of the Eureka Springs Times Echo)

"We've always had a problem with 'the middle.' We like bread, we're not terribly fussy about the fixing’s. When it comes to America, we have always been fans of the coasts, and have tried to ignore anything in between. In between was a myriad of bad accents, farmers, newscasts of natural disasters, and bad dentistry.

We knew that anomalies existed. Eureka Springs is one such anomaly. Its charm is endless, it's residents startlingly sophisticated, and above all, it feels comfortable. Eureka Springs feels like flannel pajamas. We LOVE flannel pajamas."

Signed, "The Girls" (recovering uppity LA women, now our very own Beverly Hillbillies. Smooch!)
